How We Test & Rank Tools

The order of every list on this site is an editorial call. A vendor cannot buy its way onto a roundup, and it cannot buy its way up one.

• Affiliate commission does not decide the order. A pick with no affiliate programme can sit at the top, and often does.
• Only the top three picks in a roundup get an affiliate button, however many tools have a programme. The rest link straight to the vendor.
• If anything on a page is ever paid for, it is labelled as sponsored at that spot, as the partnership page sets out.

Vendors do sometimes reach out and ask to be considered. That gets them a look, nothing more. They go through the same checks as everything else, and plenty do not make the list.

Not every tool in a 12-item roundup has been used for months. Claiming otherwise would be dishonest, so every pick is checked at one of three levels, and each roundup says which level its picks got.

1. Used in real work

The tool has run on our own sites, our products, or client projects. This is where the strongest opinions come from: what broke, what the renewal looked like, and how support answered.

2. Signed up and tried

We created an account, used the free plan or trial, and ran the core job the roundup is about, such as generating a deck, tracking a keyword, or connecting a VPN server. The screenshots in these sections come from those sessions.

3. Checked from the source

We read the live pricing page, the documentation, the changelog and the marketplace listing, and compared them with what the tool claims. This level is enough to rule a tool in or out on price, limits and features. It is never passed off as long-term use.

The number one pick is the best starting point for the reader the post is written for. It is not the tool that wins on every feature. Picks are weighed in this order:

• Fit: does it solve the exact job in the title, for the reader the post names?
• Real cost: the free plan's limits, the paid price, and the renewal price, not just the first-year offer.
• How it holds up: reliability, update history, support, and whether the company is likely to be around next year.
• Ease of living with it: setup time, learning curve, and lock-in.
• Where we have more evidence: when two picks are close, the one checked at a deeper level goes higher.

Every roundup explains why its top pick sits at the top, and who should pick something further down the list instead.

Prices, free-plan limits, renewal terms, version numbers, install counts and ratings change often. They are read from the vendor's own pages or the official marketplace at the time of writing, not from memory or other roundups.

We do not stamp a month on those checks in the article body, because that goes stale. The date shown on each post is its last real content update.

Tools launch and change, so roundups get updated. A pick added after publishing goes through the same checks as the original list, and its placement follows the same criteria. A new tool does not go to the top unless it beats the current top pick on fit and real cost for that reader.

Screenshots are captured by us from the tool or the vendor's page, not taken from press kits. Where a vendor blocks automated access, it is captured in a normal browser session. When we could not verify a vendor claim, such as a project count or an uptime figure, the article says so plainly.
