18 Best AI WordPress Plugins in 2026

AI is published by WordPress.org itself. It reached 50,000+ active installs within ten months of launch and is tested up to WordPress 7.1.2.

It adds a list of features you switch on one by one: alt text generation, title and excerpt generation, meta descriptions, content summaries, tag and category suggestions, translation, comment reply suggestions, and image generation and editing. Each needs a connector whose model supports that job. Image generation, for example, needs a provider that can make images.

Here is the setup, in order:

1. Update to WordPress 7.0 or later. The plugin will not activate on older versions.
2. Install one provider plugin, such as AI Provider for Anthropic, from Plugins → Add New.
3. Go to Settings → Connectors, click Set up next to that provider, and paste your API key.
4. Install AI, then open Settings → AI, turn on Enable AI, and switch on only the features you want.

The common mistake is step 2. People install the AI plugin, see the red warning, and assume it is broken. It just has no provider yet.

The catch: it is labelled experimental, it only works in the block editor (not the Classic Editor), and you pay your AI provider for every request. For alt text and excerpts that bill is usually small.

Rank Math has 4 million+ active installs, a 4.8 rating from over 7,500 reviews, and was updated days before I checked.

Its AI, now called Rank Math AI (it used to be Content AI), researches a keyword, suggests the questions and terms to cover, and drafts or rewrites sections against that brief. The advantage is that the AI sits next to the SEO data, so you write toward a real target instead of guessing.

One change worth knowing: Rank Math AI no longer needs a PRO licence. It is a separate subscription that works with the free plugin, and free users get a small monthly allowance to try it. The pricing page showed me euro prices only, so check the USD price at checkout before you commit.

If you already use Rank Math, this is the easiest AI to adopt. I compared it with a lighter option in Rank Math vs Slim SEO.

Yoast SEO is the most installed SEO plugin on WordPress at 10 million+ active installs, and its directory name now ends with "built-in AI".

Yoast SEO Premium costs $118.80 a year and includes AI Generate (titles and meta descriptions, including in bulk), AI Optimize, AI Summarize, and a content planner. The part I like is the pricing: the AI runs on Yoast's side, with no API key and no credits to top up. Yoast calls the use unlimited while the features are in beta.

There is also a pricier Yoast SEO AI+ bundle at $358.80 a year. That adds brand tracking inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity answers, which is a different job from writing.

The catch: none of the AI is in the free plugin, so this only makes sense if you were going to buy Premium anyway.

All in One SEO has 2 million+ active installs, down from the 3 million+ it showed the last time I updated this list. Its AI is narrower than Rank Math's: it writes SEO titles, meta descriptions, and suggestions on demand.

The AI runs on AI credits. Paid plans include a monthly pool (10,000 credits on Basic, which starts at $49.50 for the first year and renews at $99). Lite users can use the AI too, but only with credits they buy.

It is a sensible pick if you already run AIOSEO and want the title and description writing off your plate. For deeper drafting, Rank Math goes further.

GetGenie bundles an AI writer, keyword research, and SERP analysis in one plugin, with 80,000+ active installs. It now also markets AEO and GEO checks, meaning how well a page is set up to be quoted by AI answers.

The free plan gives 2,500 AI words a month plus a few keyword and SERP checks. Starter is $6 a month billed yearly for 20,000 words.

It competes directly with Rank Math AI. Choose GetGenie if you want a standalone writing suite and do not want to change SEO plugins. Just do not run both.

Jetpack AI Assistant comes from Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. It works as a block: ask it to draft, rewrite, change tone, translate, or make an image without leaving the post.

You get 20 free requests to try it. After that it is $9.95 a month billed yearly (or $14.95 month to month), with the AI cost included.

The catch is Jetpack itself. The main plugin has 3 million+ installs but a 3.7 rating, the lowest on this list, mostly because it bundles many modules. If you only want AI writing, the official AI plugin or Rank Math is lighter.

AI Engine by Meow Apps is the most complete AI framework for WordPress. It has 90,000+ active installs, a 4.9 rating from over 860 reviews, and it was updated days before I checked.

It gives you an on-site chatbot, a content and image generator, a developer playground, and an MCP server, so an AI agent like Claude can manage your site. It works with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, OpenRouter, and more.

Pro is $79 a year. The free version already covers most sites.

AI Puffer, which many older lists still call AI Power, packs a content writer, bulk generation, image tools, a chatbot, and automations into one free plugin. It has 10,000+ active installs and is updated often.

Pro is $9.99 a month for one site. Like AI Engine, it runs on your own provider key.

It is capable for free, but the interface is busy and some tools feel rougher than a focused plugin. AI Engine is the more polished version of the same idea.

WPForms is the most installed form plugin at 5 million+ active installs, and "AI Form Builder" is now the first thing in its name.

The free Lite version includes AI Choices (it writes the options for a dropdown or checkbox list) and Smart Edit. Full "describe a form and get the whole thing" generation needs a paid plan, from $49.50 for the first year.

One thing to know before you test it: WPForms AI does not work on a local site, only on a live domain.

Elementor is the most used page builder, with 10 million+ active installs of the free plugin. Elementor AI writes copy, builds sections, writes custom CSS, and makes images right inside the editor.

The pricing changed. AI now runs on Elementor One credits, a monthly pool shared with image optimisation, email, and accessibility fixes. Each AI action costs 1 to 40 credits. When I checked, Elementor One was $180 for the first year with 25,000 credits a month, and the Pro editor plans alone included none.

If your site is built in Elementor, this AI fits your workflow. If it is not, do not switch builders for it.

Divi AI is built into the Divi builder, and Divi 5 is now out. It writes and improves text, generates and edits images, writes code, and builds whole layouts from a prompt, matched to the page you are on.

It costs $193 a year or $21.36 a month. Text, image, layout, and code generation are unlimited. The newer AI Agent is the exception: it gets $5 of included use each month.

If you are buying Divi too, check the current Divi discount first, because the Divi Pro bundle already includes AI.

SeedProd is a landing page and theme builder with 600,000+ active installs. It has AI text and image generation inside the builder, and an AI site builder that makes three sites free.

Its AI runs on credits you buy separately from the licence, so budget for both. I could not confirm the credit price from its pricing page.

It is the right tool for fast, conversion-focused pages rather than a complex site.

Tidio combines live chat with Lyro, an AI agent that answers questions from your own help content and hands off to a person when it gets stuck. It has 70,000+ active installs.

The free plan includes your first 50 Lyro conversations, once. After that, Lyro starts at $32.50 a month billed yearly for 50 conversations a month.

It is the most approachable AI support tool for a small store. Just remember that a chat widget loads on every page for every visitor once it is live.

Uncanny Automator is the no-code automation plugin for WordPress, with 40,000+ active installs and a 4.9 rating. It connects your plugins with "when this happens, do that" recipes, and AI can be one of the steps.

For example: when a form is submitted, have AI summarise it; when a post is published, have AI draft the social copy.

Its newer AI agent and AI page builder come with included usage, so no key is needed to try them. The OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini steps inside recipes use your own key. Pro starts at $20 a month billed yearly.

ShortPixel compresses every image you upload and converts it to WebP and AVIF. It has 300,000+ active installs. It now also writes alt text and captions with AI.

The free plan gives 100 image credits a month. Unlimited compression is $10.99 a month (the WordPress.org readme still says $9.99, which is out of date), and paid plans include 100 AI credits a month for alt text.

Image weight is one of the biggest drags on Core Web Vitals, so this is a quiet speed win. Set it once and it handles every future upload.

TranslatePress translates your site through a visual editor, with 400,000+ active installs. It runs an AI pass across the whole site, then lets you correct any line on the live page.

The free version includes 2,000 AI words, enough to test it on a few pages. Paid plans add larger word allowances, and its pricing page lists them in euros.

AI first, human second is the right way to translate. It is the strongest pick here if you are going multilingual on a budget.

Link Whisper suggests relevant internal links while you write and finds orphaned posts with no links pointing at them. The free version has 30,000+ active installs.

Premium starts at $97 a year for one site. If you go premium, check the current Link Whisper deal first.

Two honest flags. Its 4.1 rating is the second lowest here, and it was only tested up to WordPress 7.0.6 when I checked, one version behind the others. Accept its suggestions one by one; never bulk-insert links.

Akismet is the oldest machine-learning plugin on WordPress, added to the directory in 2005, with 5 million+ active installs. It checks every comment and form entry against a model trained on spam from across its whole network.

Personal, non-commercial sites pay what they want, from $0. Commercial sites start at $9.95 a month billed yearly. In WordPress 7, it even shows up on the Connectors screen next to the AI providers.

It is not flashy. But it has been quietly doing its job since long before "AI plugin" was a marketing phrase.
