I run both of these plugins across real WordPress builds.

Rank Math on the content-heavy sites where I want the control, Slim SEO on the client sites where every millisecond is watched.

So this is not a spec-sheet stare-off. It is the honest split I landed on after using each in real work.

Here is the thing most comparisons miss. These two are not really rivals. They answer different questions.

Rank Math asks, "what do you want to control?" Slim SEO asks, "what can I just handle for you?"

Slim SEO — the lightweight

Best for: Speed-critical sites and anyone who wants correct SEO defaults with zero configuration and no dashboard clutter.

Slim SEO takes the opposite view: "Search Engine Optimization Made Simple."

You install it. It works. Titles, meta descriptions, Open Graph, an XML sitemap, breadcrumbs, basic schema, all set automatically. There is almost nothing to configure, and that is the whole point.

It is far smaller, 60k installs to Rank Math's 4M, so the community and support around it are smaller too.

Rank Math hands you a control panel for everything. Slim SEO makes the calls for you and gets out of the way.

Here is the summary, then what actually matters on each row.

On-page analysis and keywords

This is the clearest split of the whole comparison.

Rank Math scores your post as you write. A colour-coded number, 30-plus checks, your focus keyword in the title, the URL, the first paragraph, the headings, the alt text. Unlimited focus keywords, even on free. Writers who like guardrails love it.

Slim SEO has none of it. No score. No keyword box. Nothing to turn green.

That is a choice, not a gap. The developer's view is that a plugin nagging you about keyword density gets in the way of writing well. So it handles the technical side and leaves the words to you.

The verdict: want guidance, or manage writers who need a checklist? Rank Math. Does the score box just push you to stuff keywords? Slim SEO's silence is the feature.

Schema and structured data

Rank Math wins this one, and it is not close.

Free gives you 15-20+ ready-made schema types. Pro adds Schema Templates and a custom JSON-LD generator that can output almost any schema.org type, with rules for where it applies. If you chase rich results, that is real power.

Slim SEO adds schema automatically for the common cases, and its Pro brings a visual builder. It is correct and it is effortless. It is just not built for deep customisation.

The verdict: Rank Math for rich-result depth and custom markup. Slim SEO if you only want valid schema and never want to open a settings page.

Technical SEO: sitemaps, redirects, 404s

Both do the basics well: XML sitemap, breadcrumbs, canonicals, robots. The gap is the extra toolkit.

Rank Math bundles a redirect manager and a 404 monitor in the free version. Plus a role manager and granular sitemap controls. On a busy or freshly migrated site, having all of that inside the SEO plugin genuinely saves time.

The verdict: Rank Math is the fuller toolkit out of the box. Slim SEO keeps the core tight and expects you to bolt on redirects only if you actually need them.

Titles, meta and social

Rank Math gives you the steering wheel. Title and meta templates with variables, per-post overrides, full Open Graph and Twitter cards, a per-post social image. Agencies want exactly this.

Slim SEO writes your titles, meta and Open Graph tags automatically and gets on with it. Less control. Far less busywork.

The verdict: Rank Math if you want to hand-tune every title. Slim SEO if you want a whole site done correctly without touching it.

Analytics and Search Console

Rank Math pulls Search Console and Google Analytics into your WordPress dashboard, free. Positions, clicks, top queries, index status, all without leaving WP.

Some people love that. Others see one more thing loading in their admin.

Slim SEO keeps Search Console to Pro and skips analytics entirely. Part of why it stays so light.

The verdict: Rank Math if you like your data inside WordPress. Slim SEO if you check Search Console directly anyway and would rather not carry the weight.

Internal linking

Both help. Differently.

Rank Math suggests contextual internal links while you write, with AI-assisted picks in Pro. You stay in control and choose.

Slim SEO Pro automates it. Its Link Manager has Auto Link, which inserts internal links by keyword rules, plus broken-link monitoring.

The verdict: Rank Math suggests, you decide. Slim SEO does the busywork for you. If internal linking is a chore you keep skipping, Slim SEO's approach wins.

AI features

Rank Math's Content AI is the more developed of the two: content optimization, an AI writer, SEO suggestions.

Just be clear-eyed about it. It is a trial, then a credit-based subscription on top of Pro. Not free, not unlimited.

Slim SEO includes a lighter writing assistant in Pro.

The verdict: Rank Math has the deeper AI toolset. Budget for it as an add-on, not a freebie.

WooCommerce and local SEO

Rank Math has real modules for both. WooCommerce product schema and sitemaps, and Local SEO with Local Business schema, opening hours, multiple locations.

Slim SEO adds product schema automatically but has far less dedicated e-commerce or local tooling.

The verdict: running a store or a local business? Rank Math, comfortably.

Ease of use and support

Two more places where scale and philosophy show.

Rank Math is modular, you toggle features on and off. Powerful, but a lot of screens; a beginner can feel buried. Slim SEO has almost nothing to set, which is either bliss or too little, depending on you.

On support, it is lopsided. Rank Math has 4M+ users, 7,400+ reviews, and tutorials for every problem you could hit. Slim SEO is much smaller, though its developer Anh Tran (also behind Meta Box) is well regarded and responsive.

The verdict: if a big safety net matters to you, that is Rank Math.

Performance: the real benchmark

Enough opinion. Here are numbers.

AcceleraWP's 2026 test measured frontend execution time across the major SEO plugins:

Slim SEO is the fastest on the frontend. Several times lighter than Rank Math, which is exactly what you would expect from a plugin that does less.

Two honest caveats. "The lightest" is contested, The SEO Framework is right behind it and wins AcceleraWP's overall verdict. And Rank Math is not "heavy" in absolute terms. It is mid-pack, clearly lighter than the Yoast and AIOSEO it usually gets compared to.

For most sites the difference is a few tens of milliseconds. On a slow shared host, or when site speed is a real engineering priority, that gap starts to bite.

Pricing in 2026 (both changed)

This is the part every other comparison gets wrong. So read carefully: both are annual subscriptions now.

If you read that Slim SEO is a one-time payment, that is old news. Slim SEO Pro renews yearly now.

And Rank Math's real pricing edge is not a tier at all. Its free version is so complete that many sites never pay a cent.

Which should you choose?

Skip the feature envy. Match the plugin to the site.

Choose Rank Math if:

• You publish regularly and want on-page guidance as you write.
• You need rich schema and keyword rank tracking.
• You want Search Console and Analytics inside WordPress.
• You run client sites and want one powerful tool.

Its free tier alone covers most of that.

Choose Slim SEO if:

• Speed and Core Web Vitals are your priority.
• You want SEO that is correct by default, with nothing to configure.
• You are tired of a cluttered SEO dashboard.

It does less, on purpose, and it is faster for it.

What I actually do: Rank Math on content-heavy sites like this one, Slim SEO on client sites where every plugin has to justify its weight. Neither is wrong. They answer different questions.

What about Yoast, AIOSEO, SEOPress and The SEO Framework?

These two are not the only options. Four more worth knowing, and where each sits.

Yoast SEO

The default for years, with the biggest free base and community. The catch: it was the slowest performer in AcceleraWP's benchmark, and its premium is priced per site, which adds up fast.

If Slim SEO appeals but you want a bit more built in, compare this one. Zero-config and lightweight like Slim SEO, and it took AcceleraWP's overall verdict, the best all-round balance of speed and features.

Can you migrate between them?

One direction is easy. The other is not.

Slim SEO has a built-in importer. Slim SEO, Tools, Migrate, and it pulls your titles and meta from Rank Math, Yoast, AIOSEO, SEOPress and The SEO Framework. Just keep the old plugin active during the move so it can read the data.

Going the other way, into Rank Math from Slim SEO, is not a one-click flow. Rank Math imports cleanly from Yoast and AIOSEO, but not from Slim SEO, so plan that as a manual re-map.

In short: moving toward the lighter plugin is the easy path.

Final take

Rank Math vs Slim SEO is not "which is better." It is "which problem are you solving."

Both are well built and actively maintained. So you are picking a philosophy, not settling.
