Social Bookmarking Sites List 2026: 58 of 488 Still Work

I first published a social bookmarking list on this site in 2019. It grew to "300+ sites", and like everyone else, I kept adding names and rarely checked the old ones.

This time I checked. I pulled every site named on 16 social bookmarking lists ranking on Google, my own old list included, and loaded all 488 of them. Only 58 turned out to be real, working platforms.

Then I went one step further than any list I found. On the big platforms, I opened real pages and read the rel attribute on the links people had actually shared. That is the only honest way to answer the "dofollow" question.

How many social bookmarking sites still work in 2026?

About one in eight. Here is what I found across all 488 sites:

The "not a bookmarking site" row surprised me. Lists pad their numbers with press release sites, business directories, Trello and even Linktree.

My own old list did not come out well either. I could still read 107 domains from its archived copy. Just 14 of them still work, and another 14 now point to gambling or scam pages. That is why this page was rebuilt from scratch.

The longest list in my sample, a "200+ sites" page, had 187 domains I could extract. Only 40 were real platforms, and 65 were dead or parked. A homepage selling "1000+ sites" named 18 of them on the page, and 17 were link farms.

One list held up well. A curated 54-site list still had 36 real platforms, about two in three. Short lists that someone maintains beat giant ones every time.

Which famous bookmarking sites are dead or hijacked?

These names still appear on "best social bookmarking sites" roundups. I opened every one.

CiteULike is the one that stuck with me. It closed in March 2019 after 15 years, and the domain was later picked up by a casino review site. Every list that still links to it is now sending readers to gambling pages.

Digg needs a line of its own. Kevin Rose and Alexis Ohanian bought it back in 2025, and an open beta launched in January 2026. That beta closed in March because of a bot problem.

Digg came back in May 2026 as an AI news feed that pulls from X, and you cannot submit your own links.

If a list still recommends Pocket, Delicious or CiteULike, nobody has checked it in years.

Which social bookmarking sites are dofollow?

Very few, and it depends on where the link sits. I opened live pages on each platform and read the rel attribute on the links users had shared.

The Hacker News result is the most interesting. A new story carries nofollow, and the tag disappears once voters push it onto the front page. You cannot buy that link. The community decides.

Slashdot works the same way in spirit. Editors pick which submissions become stories, so the followed link is earned.

Pinterest, Quora and LinkedIn put their pages behind a login wall for my checker, so I have left them out rather than guess. When I last checked, the Pinboard account needed to post public bookmarks cost $22 a year.

Two honest limits. Google treats nofollow and ugc as hints, not strict rules, so a followed link is not a promise of ranking help. And platforms change these settings, so check a live page before you rely on any row above.

These are the 58 real platforms from my check, plus Substack, which I added because its post links came back followed. I grouped them by what you can actually do on each one.

Link-sharing communities (11)

You submit a link, and real people vote, comment or ignore it. These can send actual visitors, but every one of them punishes drive-by self-promotion.

Bookmarking and read-later tools (12)

These are genuine bookmarking tools. People use them to save links for themselves, and some make collections public.

Visual bookmarking sites (8)

If your content has a strong image, these beat any text-only bookmarking site. People save pictures first and click through second.

Blogging and publishing platforms (11)

Here you publish a short post and link out from inside it. This is where most of the followed links on this page live, so write something genuinely useful, not a thin link drop.

Social networks and media sites (17)

The biggest audiences on this page. Links here are mostly nofollow, but this is where people actually are, so the traffic can dwarf every other section.

Are free "instant approval" bookmarking sites worth it?

No. These are the 183 link farms from my check, and they are the biggest single block on most lists.

They are easy to spot. Most are WordPress or old Pligg clones with titles like "Social Bookmarking Service To Increase Traffic". The latest "stories" are all SEO posts from people chasing the same backlink. Nobody reads them.

The "without registration" searches lead straight to them. The sites that advertise posting without an account are these farms, not real communities. The sign-up on real platforms is exactly what keeps this junk out.

Some farms are worse than useless. One "high DA bookmarking" domain from a ranking list now shows a Cloudflare suspected-phishing warning. Another 87 entries were copies of the same directory template, all titled "Best Web Directory Website".

Google's spam policies name "automated programs or services to create links to your site" as a link scheme. Paid "500 bookmarks" packages run on exactly these farms. I would never put a client site on them.

Does social bookmarking still help SEO in 2026?

Yes, but not in the way the old lists sell it. Treat it as distribution, not link building.

• Discovery. A new page shared on a busy platform like Reddit, Hacker News or Flipboard gets found by crawlers and readers quickly.
• Referral visits. One genuinely useful post in the right subreddit can outsend a hundred farm submissions.
• Brand mentions. Your name showing up across real platforms helps search engines and AI answer engines understand who you are.

What it rarely does is pass ranking power. Most links are nofollow, and the followed ones on Hacker News or MetaFilter are earned, not submitted. My position has not changed: links only survive core updates when they are built for the audience first.

If a new page is not getting indexed at all, bookmarking will not fix it. That is usually a crawl or canonical problem, which is a technical SEO job.

How do you use social bookmarking without spamming?

This is the routine I would follow for a new article today.

1. Pick three platforms, not thirty. Match them to the content: a recipe goes to Pinterest, a dev tutorial to dev.to and Hacker News, a small business guide to BizSugar and LinkedIn.
2. Use the account before you promote. On Reddit and Hacker News, comment and share other people's work for a few weeks first. New accounts that only post their own links get removed.
3. Write a human title. Use the headline a reader would click, not your target keyword. Farms read like keyword lists, so real communities flag that style fast.
4. Add something on the platform itself. On Medium, Substack or Blogger, write a short standalone post that stands on its own, then link to the full piece.
5. Space it out. A few submissions a week look natural. Fifty identical bookmarks in a day is the exact pattern spam filters look for.
6. Check your link after posting. Right-click it, choose Inspect, and read the rel value yourself. It takes ten seconds and beats any "dofollow list".

Most social bookmarking lists are graveyards. Out of 488 sites, 58 still work, and the rest are farms, dead domains, or gambling pages wearing an old brand name.

The platforms that survived are good ones. Pick three that your readers already use, show up like a person, and let the community decide what gets seen.

Skip the 1,000-site lists, and read the rel on your own links before you believe anyone's dofollow claim. For links that hold up, build them as part of a real link-building plan.
